ACADEMIC MUSICAL COMEDY THEATRE

The theatre opened in 1933 with the premiere of G. Stottgart and R. Friml operetta "Rose-Marie". The establishment of the theatre was greatly promoted by its director, People's artist of Russia, the state prize winner G. Kugushev who had been working in 1930s-1950s. In 1943 the all-Russian conference on problems of Soviet operetta called Sverdlovsk theatre "the laboratory of Soviet operetta". Leading composers of that time collaborated with the theatre. Classical operettas "Pericola", "La Belle Helene" "The Violet of Montmartre", etc.
Over 20 years the theatre was headed by V. Kurochkin. In 1956 he was the first director in the country to stage the modern Western musical "The Black Dragon" by D. Modugno which was on stage for over 15 years. K. Strezhnev has successfully headed the theatre in recent years. The theatre pioneered the staging of show-musical "Thief of Baghdad" by D. Tukhmanov and L. Bernstein's musical "Candid or Optimism". In 1993 there was a 60th anniversary of the theatre and all-Russian festival of musical theatres took place at its stage where there were troupes from Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Omsk and Novosibirsk. The box-office is working daily from 10 to 19.
